2009 Perth Writers Festival a ‘runaway success’
The Perth Writers Festival 2009 was a ‘runaway success’, according to program manager Katherine Dorrington.
‘We are thrilled with how successful this year’s Perth Writers Festival was’, Dorrington told WBN. ‘Feedback from industry, authors, participants and public alike has been outstanding and reflected in a huge increase in audience attendances. In particular highlights included our family and children’s program, a sold out opening address by Peter Singer and a wonderful closing event with Irish author Sebastian Barry.’
In its second year on campus at the University of Western Australia, attendance at the festival topped 20,000, a huge leap of 5000 from last year.
The Festival opening night featured a sold-out address by Peter Singer, followed by a party. This was a ‘huge hit’, Dorrington told WBN, with guests from the publishing industry, authors, VIPs, and members of the public.
Thousands of children and parents enjoyed the Family Day and crowds packed venues for comedian James Campbell and writers including Robert Baer, Stella Rimington and Singer, who were just a handful of 130 authors participating this year. Rimington and Baer attracted standing-room only crowds, with Rimington’s paid event one of the sold-out shows. Campbell’s two Family Day shows sold out so quickly that a third show was added on Saturday. The variety of authors and themes this year saw literary fans of all ages soaking up the festival atmosphere.
