Author Xinran captured the attention of many a reader with her bestselling book The Good Women of China about Chinese mothers who had lost, or had to abandon their daughters. She’s back with a new book called Message from an Unknown Chinese Mother, which is an extension of the themes explored in her first book. Also appearing on this week’s Most Mentioned chart were Wendy James’ Where Have You Been?, Rebecca Stead’s When You Reach Me, Martin Amis’ The Pregnant Widow and Shira Nayman’s The Listener–Media Extra.

What’s Hot in the Media 8th February 2010

Carmel Bird has generated quite a bit of interest with her new novel Child of the Twilight and it shows in the number of mentions received in the media this weekend. Rebecca Stead’s When You Reach Me, Garry Disher’s Wyatt and Henning Mankell’s The Man from Beijing also sparked interest. But it was Kirsten Tranter’s The Legacy that came out on top. Ingrid, the protagonist, inherits a lot of money and leaves Australia and her friends to live in the New York art world. Newbery and Caldecott winners announced

Newbery and Caldecott award winners for 2010 were announced at the American Library Association’s midwinter conference in Boston.

The Newbery Medal goes to When You Reach Me (Rebecca Stead, Text).

The winner of the Caldecott Medal is The Lion & the Mouse (Jerry Pinkney, Little Brown).

New Zealand-born author Jacqueline Kelly received a Newbery Honour for The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate (Henry Holt). Other Newbery Honour books were Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice (Phillip Hoose, Farrar Straus & Giroux), Where the Mountain Meets the Moon (Grace Lin, Little Brown), The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg (Rodman Philbrick, Scolastic).

The Caldecott Honour was given for Marla Frazee’s illustrations in All the World (Liz Garton Scanlon, Simon & Schuster) and Pamela Zagarenski’s illustrations in Red Sings from Treetops: A Year in Colors (Joyce Sidman, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt).
