The winners of the annual NSW KOALA (Kids Own Australian Literature Award) popular choice awards were announced in Sydney yesterday.

The winners were:

Picture Storybook Award: Rex (Ursula Dubosarsky & David Mackintosh, Puffin)

Fiction for Younger Readers: Zac Power: Series 1 (H I Larry, Hardie Grant Egmont)

Fiction for Older Readers: Garden of the Purple Dragon (Carole Wilkinson, Black Dog Books)

Fiction for Years 7-9: The Wizard of Rondo (Emily Rodda, Omnibus).

H I Larry unmasked
The KOALA awards were the chance for Hardie Grant Egmont (HGE) to reveal the ‘secret identity' of H I Larry, the pseudonymous author of its ‘Zac Power' series.

‘The "H I Larry" pseudonym was used to keep the series consistent (and boringly, to ensure that all Zac Power books are catalogued and shelved together!), and readers have long been intrigued by Larry's secret identity,' said publisher Hilary Rogers.

Chris Morphew, author of ‘The Phoenix Files' series, was unmasked as one of the authors behind the H I Larry, collecting the award on behalf of the team of Australian writers who worked on the series, a team which included Hilary Badger and Meredith Badger.
